The Best Surfskate Drills from Top Surf Trainers
Surfskate Drills Quick Links
When I got into surfskating, I had never surfed in my life. My only frame of reference was longboarding, which I had been doing for a year before getting my first surfskate.
So to learn how to surfskate, I paid for two online courses on surfskating for surfers (the only two I could find). I watched tons of surfskate tutorials. And even though I wasn’t using surfskating to become a better surfer, I did a lot of surfskate drills for surfers.
When I street cruise on my surfskate, I like to go fast, and I don’t do a lot of slow, technical surf maneuvers. However, practicing surfskate drills for surfers has been fundamental to my progress as a surfskater.
Surfskate drills are useful for surfers and non-surfers alike because they:
- Improve your balance, flexibility, and form.
- Train your body to fall into the natural flow of surfskate pumping.
- Ingrain muscle memory, which makes your progress more rapid.
- Teach you the technical terms of surf maneuvers. (For example, even though I’ve never surfed, because of surfskate drills I know surf terms like “bottom turns,” “backside” and “frontside” pumping, “cutback,” etc. I imagine this would be even more valuable to surfers.)

Surfskate Drills Training Course for Non-Surfers
If you’re a non-surfer like me looking for more surfskate training, check out my video course, “Surfskating for Non-Surfers.”
I created the course after going through all the surfskate training above—and much, much more. I realized that there were many of the movements that surfers take for granted, because they come so intuitive to them.
So I had to reverse engineer every movement in minute detail. So although I’m not a surfer, you may find my teaching style helpful, as I find that it fills in the gaps that I discovered in the surfskate training programs I’ve gone through.
